How to get hired in the happiest country on Earth and what happens to you once you are.
Somewhere in Finland this afternoon a man has four hundred job applications on his desk and he isn't reading them. A colleague has just mentioned somebody she knows. The job is gone. Every one of those four hundred people will get an automated email in six weeks.
This book shows you how to stop being one of the four hundred.
Finland is short of workers and it's still one of the hardest places in Europe for a foreigner to get hired. The problem usually isn't you. Two thirds of people here get their job without ever answering an advert. Finnish recruitment can go silent for two months at a stretch. The confident CV that works in London reads as unreliable in Helsinki. Nobody will ever tell you so because they just won’t reply.
I've sat on both sides of that desk. In more than twenty years here I have never filled in a single application form, because I got in through the side door with speculative emails. Then I hired a dozen or more people at my own agency and watched the pile from the other end. This guide is everything I learned, checked against official sources in October 2026 and written to be read in an evening and used for months.
What's inside
- The Permission covers the permits, the 2026 salary thresholds and the three-month clock that starts the day a job ends.
- The Master Key gives you the exact order to do the paperwork in, so you don't lose a whole spring queueing twice.
- The Silence explains why nobody replies and why July effectively doesn't exist.
- The Hidden Door shows you where two thirds of Finnish hiring actually happens and how to get into the room.
- The Modesty Trap rewrites the CV and letter your home country taught you, because here they count against you.
- The Language Question tells you exactly which jobs need Finnish and which don't.
- The Coffee gives you a way of networking that works in a country that hates networking, with the script included.
- The Interview explains the long silence, what they're really testing and why you should count to four.
- The Money covers pay, collective agreements and the tax card that stops your employer holding back 60 per cent of your first payslip.
- The First Ninety Days decodes the meetings, the four o'clock finish and the work sauna.
- When It Goes Wrong covers the unemployment fund you need to join before you need it.
- The Side Doors covers agency work, apprenticeships, freelancing and making a job rather than finding one.
The Toolkit
Then there's the part I'd have paid for on its own. The Toolkit at the back gives you the emails to copy, from the open application and the coffee request to the chase and both thank-you notes. It has a week-by-week ninety-day plan, the job sites and agencies worth your time and forty Finnish words that tell you what a job advert really means. Every chapter also ends with a checklist called What to actually do, so you finish each one with something to do on Tuesday.
It's honest about the hard parts too. It names the University of Helsinki study that sent around 5,000 job applications and found that a Finnish name got almost four times as many interviews as a Somali one with the same CV. Then it shows you how to get out of the pile where names decide things.
If you're planning a move to Finland, already here and stuck or married to a Finn and wondering why your CV keeps vanishing, this is the book. It's also the most useful thing you can give a friend who is about to move here.
It runs to ninety-six pages, as a PDF you can read on any device, forever.
Look inside
Here are two passages from the guide, set big enough to read on a phone.
The Silence
You applied on the ninth. It’s now the thirtieth. There has been no acknowledgement, no rejection, no automated anything. The advert is still up, which you know because you’ve been checking it, in the way one checks these things, roughly hourly.
Congratulations, because you’ve discovered the defining feature of recruitment in the Land of the Unanswered Email, which is that it makes no sound whatsoever.
The Modesty Trap
In Britain and America a CV is a sales document. It opens with a paragraph of adjectives, claims passion and upgrades every responsibility by one grade. Everybody involved knows the exchange rate. Think of it as an X Factor audition in Times New Roman. A British reader discounts it automatically.
A Finnish reader doesn’t discount it. A Finnish reader takes the document literally, notices that the claims are bigger than the evidence and draws the conclusion Finnish culture draws about people whose words outrun their facts.
That conclusion isn’t “confident”. It’s “unreliable”. Unreliable is the single most expensive thing you can look like in a country that hires to avoid worry.
