There is one room in Finland where nobody expects you to say anything. It is also the hottest room in the house, which is either a coincidence or the whole point. You sit. Somebody throws water. The heat arrives. Nobody fills the silence, because the silence is not a problem that needs filling.
Löyly is the word for what happens next. Not steam exactly, though steam is what you can see. It is the wave of heat that lifts off the stones and crosses the room and lands on you all at once, and it is the only thing anyone in there is really there for.
That is the trade. You give up the conversation. You get the löyly.
The print says so plainly. Three curls of steam above two lines of heavy rounded capitals, with enough air between them to read across a changing room. This unisex Bella and Canvas 3001 tee is printed in Europe using durable direct to garment printing that keeps the design soft and long lasting. The fabric is combed and ring spun cotton with a comfortable regular fit that suits men and women, and it comes in Navy, Black, White, Pink and Burnt Orange across sizes S to 3XL. We offer free worldwide shipping with no minimum, so it reaches you wherever your nearest sauna happens to be.
This product is made especially for you as soon as you place an order, which is why it takes us a bit longer to deliver it to you. Making products on demand instead of in bulk helps reduce overproduction, so thank you for making thoughtful purchasing decisions.

About Very Finnish Problems
VFP was started by British author Joel Willans, who met his Finnish wife in London and moved with her to Helsinki in 2002. Over the next two decades his observations of Finnish life grew into a community of 1.3 million people worldwide. Every design is inspired by real Finnish life and created by Joel and his team in Helsinki. Joel is also the author of the Very Finnish Problems books, written after many years of living in Finland and still not fully understanding it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does löyly mean?
Löyly is the Finnish word for the burst of steam and heat that rises when water is thrown onto hot sauna stones. There is no single English word for it, which is rather the point of the shirt.
Do Finns really not talk in the sauna?
Some do. Most do not. Silence in a Finnish sauna is comfortable rather than awkward, and nobody is expected to fill it.
Where do you ship?
We ship to over 50 countries including the US, Canada, UK, Australia and across Europe, and shipping is always free worldwide.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders arrive within 5 to 10 business days, and you will receive a tracking link as soon as your order ships.
What if the size does not fit?
We offer a 30 day returns policy, so if the fit is not right you can get in touch and we will sort it out. It is worth checking the size chart before ordering if you are unsure.
How should I wash it?
Machine wash it cold and inside out, then tumble dry low or hang it to dry, which keeps the print sharp for longer.
In compliance with the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), Very Finnish Problems ensures that all consumer products offered are safe and meet EU standards. The shirt itself
The shirt itself
This is not a tourist shop shirt that goes stiff and sad after one wash. The design is printed straight into the fabric using DTG, so it stays soft and will not crack, peel or fade the way a pressed on transfer does. The blanks are OEKO-TEX certified, which means they are tested free from harmful substances and safe against your skin. Every shirt is printed to order in small numbers rather than mass produced and left in a warehouse, so what arrives is made for you and built to be worn for years.

Designed in Helsinki by someone who actually lives here
Very Finnish Problems is run by Joel Willans, a British writer who moved to Finland over twenty years ago and never quite got around to leaving. Every design comes out of real Finnish life he's had with his Finnish wife, Anna and their kids, and a community of more than 1.3 million people who know exactly what no niin means.
