When everyone’s income is published in November and the whole country spends a day being furious

In most countries, money is the last taboo. The British will tell you about their divorce, their surgery and their haunted childhood before they’ll tell you what they earn. Finland has solved this with characteristic efficiency. Nobody has to ask, because every year at the start of November the Tax Administration publishes what everybody earned and the whole country has a look.

What follows is a very particular national ritual. For exactly one day, a country where asking someone’s salary ranks alongside sitting next to them on an empty bus talks about nothing but salaries. People are furious about footballers, furious about executives, furious about a 26-year-old who sold a games company and most quietly furious of all about the man two doors down whose new decking suddenly makes sense. Then the sun goes down, the fury is folded away neatly and money is not mentioned again for 364 days.

Bought this in second hand book shop while in Helsinki, fun read which explained a lot about what i saw. Short, funny entries you can dip in and out of and the bit about sauna etiquette alone was worth the money. Read it before you visit, will definitely make you laugh and help realise what is going on and why.

Pretty funny. I'll use the word kalsarikännit a lot.

This is the second book after 101 very Finnish problems. Want to know a thing or more about Finland, go now and grab copies of the two books. I learned a lot about the land, the people, their habits and costumes, the food, and much more. Everything told with humor and wit. Very good!

Loved the first Very Finnish Problems book and loved this next one as well! Maybe even more. same fun way of writing but often goes into much more detail with problems. I also liked the addition of cartoons. I learnt lots of didn't know and very often with a big smile on my face.
